  • Description

    Sambucus Canadensis York (American elderberry)

    Zones: 4 to 8

Description: The YORK elderberry variety, a cross between “Ezyoff” and “Adams No. 2,” was introduced in 1964 by the New York Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York.

It produces medium- to large-sized berries. The cymes (flower clusters) remain more upright than those of the Nova variety and bloom concurrently.

The fruit is sweet with a little more juice in it than the Nova berries and matures 1-2 weeks later. When selectively pruned, the yield is consistently – though slightly – higher than Nova’s.

The bush is a solid companion pollinator for most elderberry varieties. We have had very good results and yield by planting a 1:1 ratio of separate rows of York and Nova cuttings within the same field.

Available for shipment only between January and March.

    Sambucus Canadensis Nova (American elderberry)

    Zones: 4 to 8

Description: The NOVA elderberry variety was developed in Kentville, Nova Scotia about 1960 from an open-pollinated seedling of “Adams No. 2.”

Its cymes (flower clusters) hang downward more than those of the York variety, making it more difficult for birds to harvest before you do!

Nova produces large, sweet fruit that blooms almost simultaneously with York but ripens 1-2 weeks earlier.

The bush is a solid companion pollinator to York. When selectively pruned, is a strong annual commercial yielder of exceptional elderberries. We have had very good results and yield by planting a 1:1 ratio of separate rows of York and Nova cuttings within the same field.

Available for shipment only between January and March.
